AEO vs SEO comes down to one question: do you want the click or the quote? SEO earns a ranked link. AEO and GEO earn a place inside the AI answer. When Google shows an AI summary, people click a normal result on just 8% of visits, against 15% without one (Pew Research Center).
What is AEO, and how is it different from SEO?
AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the work of getting your content quoted inside AI answers. SEO is the work of ranking your pages in a list of links.
The goal is the big difference. SEO wants the click. AEO wants the citation, or at least a mention of your brand, in the answer from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude or Google AI Overviews.
That shift matters because AI answers absorb clicks. In a Pew Research Center study of 68,879 Google searches, people clicked a normal result on 8% of visits when an AI summary showed. Without one, they clicked on 15% of visits. Ahrefs found the top result gets a 58% lower click rate when an AI Overview sits above it.
AEO work splits into three jobs: plan answer-first content, track how visible you are in AI answers, and fix the technical issues that stop engines reading you. The map below shows what each job needs from your tools.
So SEO still gets you found. AEO decides whether you are part of the answer. Our glossary has the full definition of answer engine optimization.
What is generative engine optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of shaping content so AI engines include and cite it when they write an answer.
The term comes from a 2023 research paper led by Princeton, later accepted at KDD 2024 (Aggarwal et al.). The team tested nine ways to edit web content and measured how visible each source became inside AI answers.
Evidence won. Adding quotes from relevant sources lifted visibility by 41%. Adding statistics lifted it by 32%, and citing sources by 27%. Keyword stuffing, a classic SEO trick, did worse than doing nothing.
That last finding is the clearest line between GEO and old-school SEO. Engines that write answers reward evidence. They do not reward repetition. In practice, GEO work covers three jobs: earn citations on other sites, add evidence AI can quote, and measure your share of voice. See our glossary entry on generative engine optimization for the short version.
AEO vs GEO: are they the same thing?
Mostly, yes. AEO and GEO describe the same job: earning a place in answers written by AI.
The names come from different places. AEO took off with featured snippets and voice assistants, where one answer wins the box. GEO came out of academic work on engines that write longer answers and cite several sources.
That history leaves a small difference in emphasis. People who say AEO tend to focus on clean, direct answers on your own pages. People who say GEO tend to focus on being cited across many sources, including sites you do not own.
“Good SEO is good GEO, or AEO, AIO, LLM SEO, or LMNOPO.”

Google's own view backs this up. The labels keep multiplying, but the work underneath them barely changes. Search demand tells the same story: people now compare AEO and GEO as often as they compare GEO and SEO.
In practice the tactics are almost identical. Whether you search geo vs aeo or aeo vs geo, the honest advice is the same: pick one name, run one program, and measure it with one set of AI visibility metrics. Our fact-check on whether AEO and GEO are separate disciplines goes deeper.
What is GEO vs SEO?
GEO vs SEO is the difference between being cited and being ranked. SEO earns a spot in a list of links. GEO earns a line inside the answer itself.
The two lists do not match well. Depending on the study, only 12% to 38% of AI citations come from pages in Google's top 10. BrightEdge put the figure at 17% for AI Overviews, and Moz found 12% for AI Mode. Our AI citation sources research pulls these studies together.
The bigger gap is ownership. About 84% of what AI engines cite comes from sites brands do not own, such as news, reviews and forums (Muck Rack, 25 million cited links). SEO mostly works on your own site. GEO has to work on the wider web too, which is why AI trust signals lean so hard on earned media.
SEO still feeds GEO. AI engines search the web before they answer, so a page they cannot find or crawl will never be cited.
SEO vs GEO vs AEO: which should you do first?
Fix SEO basics first, then start AEO and GEO in the same quarter. You do not need to finish SEO before you begin.
The order matters because AI engines build answers from pages they can reach. If a bot cannot crawl or read your page, no amount of answer-first copy will get it cited. Vercel found that none of the major AI crawlers, including GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot, render JavaScript. Content that only appears after scripts run is invisible to them.
Once the basics are sound, waiting costs you. Google says AI Overviews passed 2.5 billion monthly users in May 2026 (Google I/O 2026). Buyers are already asking AI for shortlists. Use the chart below to find your starting point.
How do you measure SEO vs AEO vs GEO?
SEO is measured in rankings and clicks. AEO and GEO are measured in citations, mentions and share of voice across AI engines.
The AI side needs a different method. AI answers change from one run to the next, so a single check tells you very little. Track a fixed panel of buyer prompts, run it on a schedule, and report how often you appear over time.
Share of voice is the metric to watch. It compares your mentions with your rivals' mentions for the same prompts. Our glossary explains AI share of voice, and our AI visibility benchmarks show what good looks like.
AI referral traffic is worth tracking too. Treat it as a floor. Many AI answers send no click at all, and some visits arrive without a referrer.

Run it in three 30-day blocks: baseline and fix, rewrite and publish, then earn mentions and report.
Days 1 to 30. Pick 50 to 100 buyer prompts and record where you appear today. Fix crawl and render problems. Check robots.txt for AI bots. Add Organization and Article schema.
Days 31 to 60. Rewrite your 10 most important pages answer-first, with question headings and sourced numbers. Publish comparison and "best of" pages for the questions buyers ask AI. Keep normal SEO work running alongside.
Days 61 to 90. Go after the sites AI already cites in your category: reviews, lists, forums and trade press. Rerun the prompt panel. Report citation rate and share of voice next to rankings and clicks.
ThriveStackcitedby runs the prompt panel for you. It tracks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews, shows which sources each engine cites, and connects AI visibility to pipeline. They are three ways to be found. SEO ranks your pages in search results. AEO gets your answers quoted by AI engines. GEO is the research term for the same AI work, with more weight on citations across many sites.
No. AI engines search the web before they answer, so pages that cannot be found or crawled are rarely cited. SEO is the base. AEO and GEO build on it.
Use whichever your buyers use. The tactics are almost the same. Pick one name, run one program and report one set of AI visibility metrics.
Rarely. Most companies run two motions: SEO, and AI visibility that covers both AEO and GEO. Content and PR usually own the AI side.
All three, in order. Fix SEO basics first, then put weight on AEO and GEO, because B2B buyers now ask AI for shortlists before they visit vendor sites.
Run a fixed set of buyer prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews on a schedule. Track citation rate, mention rate and share of voice over time.
