An AI overview tracker checks whether Google shows an AI summary for your queries and whether it cites your brand. Google counts AI Overview clicks inside normal Search Console totals, so a tracker is how you see citations, sources and rivals. ThriveStackcitedby tracks Google AI Overviews next to ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
What is an AI Overview, and who sees it?
An AI Overview is the AI-written summary Google shows at the top of some search results, with links to the pages it drew from.
Reach is large. Google said at I/O in May 2026 that AI Overviews passed 2.5 billion monthly users (Google I/O 2026). Similarweb puts them on nearly four in ten US searches (The Next Web, Jul 31, 2026). Our glossary has the short definition of an AI Overview.
Google builds each one with a technique it calls query fan-out. It runs several related searches across subtopics and data sources, then writes one answer. Google says this lets it show a wider and more varied set of links than a classic results page (Google Search Central). A page that never ranked first for the exact query can still show up as a link.
The cost to publishers is clicks. In a Pew Research Center study of 68,879 Google searches, people clicked a normal result on 8% of visits when an AI summary showed and on 15% when it did not. Ahrefs found the top result gets a 58% lower click rate when an AI Overview sits above it. Our fact-check on whether AI Overviews always reduce organic traffic covers the nuance.
What does an AI overviews tracker measure?
An AI Overviews tracker checks, on a schedule, whether Google shows an AI Overview for your queries and whether your brand or pages are cited in it.
- Trigger rate. How many of your queries show an AI Overview at all.
- Citation presence. Whether one of your URLs is a source, and where it sits among the links.
- Share of voice. How often you are cited next to rivals for the same queries.
- Source gaps. Which sites win the citation when you are missing.
A rank tracker cannot report these. It shows where your blue link sits. It does not show who the AI Overview quoted.
Answers also change from one run to the next. So a good tracker repeats the same checks over time and reports the pattern. Our research on AI visibility tracking and non-determinism shows why a single check can mislead.
How to track AI Overviews: what are the steps?
Pick your queries, fix where and how often you check, run the checks on a schedule, then read the citations and the gaps.
1. Pick 20 to 50 queries. Use the questions your buyers ask: "what is" searches, "best for" searches and "how to" searches in your category.
2. Keep every run the same. Use one location and one device for each check, so results are comparable week to week.
3. Run it on a schedule. Weekly is enough to start. Move to daily for fast-moving topics.
4. Read the gaps. Look at queries where an AI Overview shows and you are missing. Open the sources it cites and see what they say that your page does not.
You can do this by hand for a handful of queries. Past that, a tracker saves the history for you.

Track the answers by engine. AI Overviews are one place buyers get answers. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Copilot each write their own, and each can name different brands for the same question.
In ThriveStackcitedby you choose which engines to monitor, up to your plan limit. The list includes ChatGPT, Google AI Overview, Perplexity, Google Gemini, Google AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, Google Search and Google News. You also choose how often checks run: weekly, or daily as an add-on.
Start with the two or three engines your buyers use most. Add more as your plan allows.
How to track traffic from AI Overviews?
Start with Search Console. Google counts traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode in the overall search totals, inside the Performance report under the Web search type (Google Search Central). The report has no separate AI Overview line.
Google added a closer view on Aug 31, 2026. Generative AI performance reports now reach every site worldwide. They show impressions from AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI in Discover by page, country and date, with device for Search. They do not include click data yet (Search Engine Journal).
That leaves a gap for clicks, so combine three sources and read them together:
- Search Console AI reports for impressions by page.
- Your analytics for visits and conversions from Google.
- An AI Overview tracker for the queries, the citations and the rivals.
A simple method works well. List the pages your tracker shows as cited in AI Overviews. Then watch impressions and clicks for those URLs in Search Console over the next few weeks. Treat the result as a directional read.
How to rank in AI Overviews: what actually helps?
Make the page indexable and useful, answer the question in the first line, and back the answer with evidence. Google says there is no secret step.
“There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.”
That does not make every page equal. Four things move the odds:
- Be eligible. The page must be indexed and able to show in Search with a snippet. Check coverage in Search Console first.
- Cover the subtopics. Fan-out searches look for them, so a page that answers the follow-up questions gives the engine more to use.
- Add evidence. In the Princeton study of generative engines, adding quotes lifted visibility by 41% and adding statistics lifted it by 32% (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024).
- Earn mentions elsewhere. About 84% of what AI engines cite comes from sites brands do not own (Muck Rack). Depending on the study, only 17% to 38% of AI Overview citations also rank in Google's top 10. Our AI citation sources research has the detail.
Our fact-check on whether AI Overviews use a different index than Google explains why indexing basics still come first.
Is a free AI overview checker enough?
A free AI overview checker is enough for a quick look at one or two queries. Once you need history, many queries or rival data, you need a tracker.
A manual check shows one moment, from one location and one device. It keeps no history, and it hides which rivals are cited. Because AI answers vary between runs, one look can mislead you either way.
Use the chart to decide. If you want to compare platforms, our AI visibility tools landscape and our ranked review of AI visibility tools show how they differ.
